Why Bread?
I thought I would share a bit about the meaning behind the name Bread Co and how it came to be. Something that is important to me is to have very meaningful name behind the company.
There were two main things that really spoke to me when I was deciding on the name. I was looking for something that symbolized the basics of what we need day-to-day living with MS, and I also wanted to tie in my faith.
The Basics
During the Great Depression, breadlines became essential for many people. With so many out of work and needing support to feed their families, these breadlines provided an essential resource, when it was needed most. I kept thinking about this when trying to come up with a name – I wanted this start-up to provide that type of foundation for an essential resource and support for people that could help with the daily battles associated with MS. I considered naming it “Bread & Butter” as this phrase relates to basic needs, or, something that people are very good at which is exactly what I want this company to be – provide basic needs for those living with MS, and to be very good at it!
My Faith
I am a born-again Christian and I found myself really leaning into my faith during all the medical tests and through the diagnosis to help me deal with the weight of it all. I kept thinking about the significance of the practice of communion. For those who may not be familiar, communion is when someone consumes wine (or juice) and bread to memorialize the death of Christ. When I think of Multiple Sclerosis and its effect on the body, I immediately connected it to the bread I have received in taking communion, representing the body of Christ. Also, in Christianity bread is a very powerful symbol, seen as a gift from God. I firmly believe difficult situations provide an underlying gift, if only you choose to see it.
I am also aware of the irony in naming a company Bread Co and being Gluten free…
