Check In

It was the Friday before Thanksgiving six months ago when I had my first in-person appointment with my neurologist. The meeting felt awkward and tense because we both knew walking out of that room that, although we had some answers, we still had a long way to go to confirm the big question.

Since that day, today was my first in-person appointment. It was time for him to take a look at where I am currently and how I'm doing with everything. We've talked on the phone a few times in the last few months and have built a strong rapport with him, which made today's appointment a bit more relaxed.

He assessed my ongoing feet issues, which still feel swollen most of the time, as well as the tightness sensation in my abdomen (which according to him, is not the feeling you get when your six pack is starting to come in). We went through the routine of testing my reflexes and seeing whether I can feel certain vibrations.

Unlike 10-year-old Jesse, who felt winning the Esso Most Improved Player award at the hockey banquet was the worst thing in the world, I think now, improving is the greatest feeling in the world! Today, I came out of that meeting with more knowledge than I had at the first meeting. I left feeling more confident in my future and looking forward to what it holds.

The only aspect of this meeting that wasn’t as good as the first was that there was no delicious Thanksgiving Dinner after this one!
